Botanical name
Indocalamus tessellatus.
Origin
Kagoshima, Kyushu, Japan.
Characteristics
Grows to 2 m. high and 7 mm in diameter. Produces exceptionally large leaves (up to 60 x 10 cm.) Lush tropical form.
Use
A large clump looks good in a large garden. Under plant with a larger bamboo such as Moso. Makes an impressive container plant.
Requirements
A hardy bamboo. Takes shade or full sun. |

Interest
Suitable for well lit indoors. The leaves are used to wrap 'chimaki' or glutinous rice balls, in Japan and throughout Asia. |
