Botanical name
Phyllostachys japonica Tsutsumiana.
Origin
In the garden of Mr. Tsutsumi from Mito City, Japan.
Characteristics
A spontaneous variation of Arrow
Bamboo that grows up to 2.5 m. The internodes repeat a bulbous shape resembling green onions. As with Arrow Bamboo, the parchment sheath that protects the shoot as it expands, doesn't fall away as commonly occurs with bamboo. Because of this, Green Onion Bamboo sheds less litter than other bamboo.
Use
Green Onion Bamboo is an unusual and elegant container
plant. It is suitable for growing indoors given adequate lighting. Bamboo grown indoors should be taken outside and hosed down from time to time. The water will wash off dust particles, especially from the underside of the leaves where the plant exchanges air. Wait for an overcast day to do this because strong sunlight will "scorch" the leaves, especially when they are wet.
Requirements
It does well in light sun or semi shade, also in pots. Its spreading occurs slowly. |

Interest
Interesting as a clump in a small garden. On bigger culms the bulb shape shoulders the culm sheath away from the culm while it is still attached at the base. This exposes the green culm beneath and is an interesting feature.
How fast will it grow?
Our Bamboo
Growth Simulation gizmo shows you the rate of growth starting off with a
small plant. Of course, growth rate depends a lot on climate, food
and water.
Small bamboo plants are slow to get going, so starting off with a bigger plant
will get you there much faster. Also, using the gizmo will show you the eventual, un-trimmed shape
in outline for this species. |
