Botanical name
Pseudosasa japonica.

Origin
Japan.

Characteristics
1,200 years ago the species was maintained to produce culms of 5 - 8 mm in diameter. Modern day Arrow Bamboo grows to a diameter of 7 - 15 mm, and reaches up to 6 m. in upright growth. The top of each culm is resplendent with large leaves, dark green above and light green below.

Use
Container plant for indoors or outside (e.g. on the patio,) and privacy screen etc...
When growing bamboo in pots keep up the water. Use a water retaining agent, or automatic watering.

Requirements
Arrow Bamboo makes a dense privacy screen when planted in the ground.
It is easily pruned if required (remove 2-3 year old culms and small growth) usually only necessary if the bamboo is kept in a pot or indoors. Arrow Bamboo grows well in very wet soils - the French call it the Water Pump due to it's capacity for water uptake!
We, in a dry climate are grateful that, it also does well in dry conditions.

Interest
Excellent container plant and suitable for well lit indoors. In Japan Arrow Bamboo is often seen nearby the ruins of old dwellings where it was cultivated to make arrows 5 - 8 mm in diameter.

How fast will it grow?
Our Bamboo Growth Simulation gizmo shows you the rate of growth starting off with a small plant. Of course, growth rate depends a lot on climate, food and water.

Small bamboo plants are slow to get going, so starting off with a bigger plant will get you there much faster. Also, using the gizmo will show you the eventual, un-trimmed shape in outline for this species.

Look out. Hardy, good in low light. Will grow quite well indoors given high light levels.
