Village scale paper manufactu re Bundles of bamboo are delivered by farmers to a rustic building perched in the fields. Here bamboo is converted into paper.
The bamboo is crushed then soaked in limed water for months, the "old" softening up process, prior to being mashed into a bamboo porridge.
From pulp to paper A man in a Mao suit scoops up an even layer of pulp onto a
wooden framed net and overturns it onto a stack of still wet sheets. Periodically, the stack is taken out to where the sheets are peeled off and hung up to dry under cover as you can see here.
The paper is then printed with red and gold motifs to be burnt as "money" at funerals.
