Botanical name
Bambusa multiplex Willowy.
Origin
Probably Southern China.
Characteristics
This species makes a feathery hedge. Culm tops nod over, growing to 3.5 m. Culms grow upwards until the leaves increasingly emerge in groups of ten or so, gradually weighing the culm so that it leans outward and the tip of the culm nods over. The bright green is contrasted by the white culm sheaths on the more recent culms.
Use
A pricacy screen to 4 m. high. A wonderful ornamental plant, the leaf size is bigger than it's close relatives Fernleaf and Fernleaf Stripestem.
Requirements
Likes to be kept moist. Trim to suit your requirements. |

Interest
Compared to other smaller clumping bamboo, Willowy bamboo has a rather open clump with whiter culm sheaths contrasting to the fresh green colour of the new culms. Nodding tips of the culms.
How fast will it grow?
Our Bamboo
Growth Simulation gizmo shows you the rate of growth starting off
with a small plant. Of course, growth rate depends a lot on climate, food and
water.
Small bamboo plants are slow to get going, so starting off with a bigger
plant will get you there much faster. Also, using the gizmo will show you the
eventual, un-trimmed shape in outline for this species. |
