Botanical name
Bambusa multiplex.

Origin
Probably Southern China.

Characteristics
When trimmed you have your six meter high wall of shimmering green. Ideal for dense, full foliage screen or hedge. Culms 20 mm. in diameter, turn golden in full sun. Will withstand -15 degrees Celsius in a sheltered position.

Use
Best grown planted in the ground in full sun or semi shade. When growing in an isolated clump, cut out old and small growth also any culms that are in your way. Start right in the middle because that's where those original culms are still lurking. Your Japanese Hedge Bamboo will look really good after the trim. Throw in some food to encourage vigorous summer growth.

Requirements
It does need a little maintenance, not a lot. Once or twice during the summer will be enough to keep it in its place. After a few years older culms tend to lean outwards. Remove by cutting them off low to the ground.

Interest
The green foliage against the yellow culms is most attractive. Japanese Hedge Bamboo looks great if it's used as a wall of dense hedge or screen for privacy purposes (Hide the Neighbours.) Once established, even in a dry position it makes a dense, feathery privacy screen to about 6 or even 7 m. for those whose neighbours use stilts. Particularly appealing in winter as late autumn culms stand naked above the foliage, like grass stalks waiting for spring warmth and new leaves. Fresh culms can be eaten, but be sure to boil them at least 3 times!

How fast will it grow?
Our Bamboo Growth Simulation gizmo shows you the rate of growth starting off with a small plant. Of course, growth rate depends a lot on climate, food and water.
Small bamboo plants are slow to get going, so starting off with a bigger plant will get you there much faster. Also, using the gizmo will show you the eventual, un-trimmed shape in outline for this species.
