Botanical name
Bambusa vulgaris Wamin.
Origin
South China.
Characteristics
A most remarkable bamboo. A sure stopper in the nursery. It reaches up to 5.5 m and up to 70 mm in diameter. Under certain conditions, the internodes swell as the shoots are growing, giving it the potbellied appearance that makes it so attractive. The internodes on 3-4 year old culms are pear shaped, in successive years they become even more compacted. After the first year or two the culms attain a yellow hue giving the appearance of age.
Use
A splendid ornamental.
Requirements
A caespitose, tropical bamboo that will withstand temperatures as low as -5 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fehrenheit.) Grown with little fertiliser Giant Buddha Belly produces squat internodes. On the other hand, too much nitrogenous fertiliser induces fast growth and less ventricosing. |

Interest
Also extremely attractive when it is not swollen. Culms will grow in sculptural form as they seek the best light to set their leaves.
How fast will it grow?
Our Bamboo
Growth Simulation gizmo shows you the rate of growth starting off
with a small plant. Of course, growth rate depends a lot on climate, food and
water.
Small bamboo plants are slow to get going, so starting off with a bigger
plant will get you there much faster. Also, using the gizmo will show you the
eventual, un-trimmed shape in outline for this species. |
