How do the restrictions
on Phyllostachys affect YOU? |
Q. Can I legally purchase say, Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys
nigra)?
A. There are no restrictions on buying Phyllostachys, only
against selling in restricted
areas and planting
in the ground.
Q. Am I permitted to grow Black Bamboo?
A. You can grow it in containers.
In the ground it is not permitted to grow within 3 metres (10') from a boundary.
Mr Bamboo advises not to grow in ground at all. Only in containers
that are not placed directly on the ground
Q. What bamboo can I
buy from Mr Bamboo?
A. Heaps! This restriction applies to Phyllostachys
only.
Q. What should I do with my Phyllostachys species that already
I have growing?
A. Unless they are in the ground and invading your
or your neighbours yard do nothing. These are truly lovely bamboos
given food
and water. You can eat the shoots of all of the Phyllostachys
species.
Q. Will it crack my pot?
A. Single fired clay, eg terra cotta is
too weak for bamboo. Suitable pots are plastic, glazed clay, reinforced
concrete/cement.
Tip 1: The top of the pot should be wider than
the base, eg, saucer or bowl shape. This will facilitate easy removal
for re-potting.
Tip 2: Single skin planters made of house brick
(230x110x76mm) will crack, they should be constructed using double
skin brick or cement blocks. Long planters, ie troughs should include
a tie, threaded 3/8th or
1/2 diameter, galvanised rod through the planter. They go from
outside the wall of the planter, drill through the walls, right
through and out the other side. Place every 500 mm (20). This
will prevent the rhizome cracking the container. Secure with an
oversized washer and a nut.
Q. Will the rhizome escape the drainage
holes of my pot?
A. Unlikely. However, the pot should
not rest directly on the ground. Use a saucer or place on a deck
or paving.
