Water
Water is the primary component, without water the roots and the leaves dry out, and
warmth without water is of little use. The living beauty of bamboo continues underground. But only in the presence
of moisture. Here, fingers of white roots tipped with various shades of red, are liberated into the soil. Nutrients are directed from the soil up into the leaves.

Drainage
If the water is not allowed to drain away it will suffocate the feeding roots and the
plant can quickly die. Too little or too much water is the most common cause of death of bamboo.
When I recall Professor Ueda I am reminded of the particular
bamboo species that so many everyday items are made of, called Madake in Japanese. It "always splits true from the butt to the tip of the culm".

Air
This is why a quality potting mix is so important. If your mix is not free draining,
the roots cannot breathe. Quality mix is open allowing air to enter and to be available around the root zone.

Confinement
Oh, and remember to always confine running bamboo
. Confine it in containers or ask about 'escape proof' planters
.
