Bamboo Care - Planting in Pots ...
Bamboo stays smaller in pots.
Grown in
a pot, bamboo is your prisoner And it isn’t hard to have healthy, graceful bamboo in a pot
Recently, in Viet Nam, Thailand and Laos we have seen many bamboo species used
as street plantings.
Few plants are as pleasing to the eye.
How to pot your bamboo?
The first concern is for a good quality potting mix. Things to keep in mind.a. Our
mix consists mainly of pine bark, and sand. The pine bark keeps the mix
open and airy. Ask for a premium grade mix when
buying. b.Slow release fertiliser including trace
elements will provide required nutrients. From
time to time liquid seaweed is a good tonic.
c. In pots bamboo needs
watering more often than other plants. The
root zone should be kept moist but not wet. d. Because
growth is rapid bamboo
should be fed regularly. e. Spring
is when the fast growing, new shoots of Running
Bamboo emerge. Summer is shooting time for Clumping
Bamboo. You need to provide in a timely
routine slow release fertiliser.
Something like N:10.P:6. K:5 is preferred for container plants. Feed
a small amount often rather than a lot at
once.

What about repotting your bamboo?
The first concern is to keep the roots moist. Things to keep in mind. a.Soak the root-ball
in water for a few hours. This will fully hydrate the bamboo. b.Saw off the bottom
10% of the root-ball. This will encourage new growth.
You can saw off some of the side roots if required to fit into the new pot. c.Ensure good drainage through the drainage holes in the new container. d.Use a premium grade potting
mix. To buffer the plant against drying out include
a 30 mm layer of hydrated water crystals mixed with potting mix around 50 mm
from the bottom of the pot.
Make sure you soak the crystals prior to use. Incorporate slow
release fertiliser into the soil. e. Top dress with a little pelletised
chicken manure and water well. Water well again after
a few hours and on the following few days.
