When
I asked myself, “What is worth doing?” I was living in Kyoto, Japan.
Bamboo was everywhere. My small room was in the northern section of the city.
Gensai, the 17th century poet lived just up the hill.
Between us were Buddhist temples and gardens separated by bamboo groves.
The spirit of Japan is in a grove of Moso.

Giant
culms and tiny green leaves, brown leaves on the ground. Every Spring, green and brown shoots bursting out.
With a bamboo brush Gensai wrote this poem:
“Bamboo leaves hang in front of my house;
At the back, they divide it from the world;
They cover it above and give shelter.
The bamboo lover, find home within their shade.” |
